Coach of the Rivers Queens, Iheanyi Collins speaking on behalf of both sides, enthused just after his side concluded a two week intensive training session at the Hockey Pitch of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex that they would succeed in Abuja.
“We had two weeks of camping and you don’t expect us to do this and not come out with a good result.
“This is the zenith of hockey in Nigeria. The top two will represent Nigeria, but we want to win the League whether we will eventually travel or not,” Collins said.
Rivers Kings will begin their campaign in the Super League against Kada Stars of Kaduna on Saturday and captain of thee side, Victor Ettah says the surprise factor will be their advantage in Abuja.
“One advantage we have is that we know them but they do not know us so we are going to shock them. Top two is our target and we are going to get it,” Attah said.
On Sunday, Rivers Queens will begin their quest for glory when they engage Plateau Queens at 2;30pm then at 4pm on the same day Rivers Kings will lock horns with Union Bank.
The competition which will be contested by eight male and seven female hockey teams from across the country will see the winner and the runners up represent Nigeria in the African Club side Championship to be held in Egypt later this year.
The eight male teams taking part in the event include champions, Niger Flickers, Union Bank, Police Machine, Yobe Desert Rollers, El-Kanemi Flickers, Kada Stars, Rivers Kings and IGP Flickers.
In the Female event, Kada Queens will be hoping to defend their crown when they face the likes of Heartland, Benue Amazons, IGP Babes, Yobe Desert Queens, Plateau Queens and Rivers Queens.
