My thoughts on the shame of Rangers and the Enugu FA

PictureJournalist, JaneFrances Nweze had been banned from watching Enugu Rangers home games

What bothers me here is not exactly the “threat to our survival tag in the NPFL” being placed on Enugu State based sports journalist, Jane Nweze.

It also is not the subsequent ban from watching matches in Enugu by the management of Rangers International but the alleged role played by the Enugu State F.A chairman, Offor Okenwa who should have done better.

Okenwa who is also the chairman of the BETnaija NNL, was said to have been part of a decision taken by the Enugu State FA in conjunction with the management of Rangers FC to ban Jane Nweze from watching or covering matches involving Rangers at the cathedral for allegedly supporting opposing teams and reporting them (Rangers) to the League Management Company as being culpable for the violence in the game against Gombe United.

The Enugu State FA boss should be questioned for towing this path.

How can a man who superintends the 2nd tier league in Nigeria advise a club management to bar a journalist from getting close to the stadium, following a report that she was caught celebrating Gombe United’s equalizer and reported the violence at the stadium to the LMC.

Offor Okenwa ought to have known that a journalist is at liberty to support any club he or she so desires, same as the fan with a caveat he or she does not misinform the public.

Perhaps he was not aware that there was violence at Nnamdi Azikiwe International stadium on the day?

Maybe he is also not aware that the LMC camera man for the match was beaten to stupor, so how can an incident that was public knowledge as at when it happened be pinned on just one person as the one who made the report?

Today, Jane Nweze is now a threat to the survival of Rangers or a “Security Threat” as they put it.

It is like our football administrators chasing shadows rather than think of how to get their team out of its troubles.

I urge the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, LMC and the president of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Honour Sirawoo to wade into the matter because Jane Nweze may be lucky walking the streets of Enugu free as long as she does not get close to the stadium.

It may be Jane today but could be some one else tomorrow.
